Our Story:
We've never really done life the conventional way.
We've traveled, chased opportunities, packed up our lives more times than we can count, and called a lot of different places home.
We've lived in a shed, a trailer, an apartment, rental houses, and eventually a home of our own. Every place has been a chapter in our story. Some chapters were exciting, some were challenging, and some taught us that home has a lot less to do with four walls and a lot more to do with the people inside them.
But somewhere along the way, our dreams started to change.
We started thinking less about where we wanted to go next and more about where we wanted to put down roots.
We wanted to move closer to home. Closer to family. We wanted a place where our kids could grow up a little slower, where their childhood memories would be made outside instead of in front of a screen.
A place where muddy boots are normal, bikes are always scattered across the yard, and coming inside before dark is optional.
We dreamed of wide-open space. Room for dirt bikes, a track of our own, animals, projects that never seem to end, and enough land for our kids to explore until their imaginations run wild.
More than anything, we wanted to build a place our kids would always want to come back to.
So we bought 11 acres of dirt in Illinois.
No house. No barn. No perfectly laid-out plan.
Just a piece of land, two kids, a whole lot of ideas, and a dream we've decided is worth chasing.
Now we're preparing to sell the home we worked so hard for, pack up our lives once again, and start building something we hope will last for generations.
The house, the barn, the dirt bike track, the animals, the endless projects, and probably a few questionable financial decisions along the way.
We're starting from the ground up. Literally.
So, Why Hats?
Well, somewhere between buying the land and realizing how much everything costs, one thing became pretty clear.
DIRT AIN'T CHEAP.
And apparently neither is anything you want to put on it.
I've always loved creating things, and with an embroidery machine, a little creativity, and a whole lot of determination, I figured why not turn something I enjoy into something that could help us build our future?
And that's how Dirt Ain't Cheap began.
What started as a funny saying about our expensive patch of dirt became something that represents so much more.
Taking chances. Working hard. Building something from nothing. Choosing a life that might not make sense to everyone else but means everything to us.
Every hat is a small piece of that story. And every order helps us get a little closer to turning those 11 acres into the place we've been dreaming about.
We're not a big brand with a warehouse full of products. We're a family figuring it out as we go, making hats, raising kids, and sharing the messy, beautiful process of building our forever.
We don't know exactly how this adventure will unfold. There will be setbacks, surprises, muddy days, expensive mistakes, and hopefully a whole lot of laughter.
But that's life, isn't it?
And if there's one thing we've learned from all the places we've called home, it's that the best stories aren't always the ones that go according to plan.
Here's to Forever.
To slower childhoods, bigger adventures, muddy boots, full hearts, and building something our kids will be proud to call home.
Thanks for being a little part of our story.
Dirt ain't cheap. But the memories? Those are priceless.
With love,
The Roker Family 🤎
Follow along as we turn 11 acres of dirt into Roker Ranch, one project (and one hat) at a time.
